Rosalie Jurczenko

Rosalie Jurczenko is a Wellington born artist with a Diploma of Fine Art from the National Art School,Sydney, (East Sydney Tech) 1990, and a BA in Art History , 2004, Victoria University, Wellington. She has exhibited since 2003 with the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and around the Wellington region at the Thistle Hall Gallery and Expressions in Upper Hutt. She has also written exhibition reviews for the internet, undertaken statue restoration projects and works from her studio at home. Works are held in private collections in New Zealand, Australia, USA and UK.

I have always used the still life genre as a starting point to my paintings. It is within this interior world that the exterior one is reflected and therefore light, luminosity and mark making become integral to my work. Referencing art history and using texture, colour and form from pottery and textiles and other sources of material culture build up my paintings compositionally. By using a limited palette of grays, indigo, silver, pale ochres shot through with scarlets and purples, taken from twilight or moonlit beach walks, I aim to invest a sense of silence contemplation. In turn this acts as a metaphor for our placement within the environment in a potentially harmonious way.. Letting oil paint drip and run, to contrast with the delineation of forms, alludes to movement such as wind, plant growth or simply, one's own hand.
