WORKSHOP OUTLINE:
This one day workshop will give you experience of using a variety of special paints known as interference and iridescent colours. They achieve their reflective properties by synthetically reproducing something of nature’s beauty – the pearlescent qualities found in fish scales, the dust of a butterfly’s wing, and the shiny and reflective qualities found in certain metals. New Zealand’s Paua shell will be used as inspiration and you will make two small paintings, and an iridescent acrylic skin which you can use in future paintings or craft work. You will also experience how to enliven and enhance your favourite colours with the addition of paints from the iridescent range. Painting methods used throughout the day include extrusion resist, dry brush work, and water media techniques. You will use top quality professional acrylic products, including OPEN, fluid, iridescent and interference paints, pastes, gels and mediums.
OUTCOMES:
At the end of the day you will have:
• Two small art works inspired by the Paua shell.
• An acrylic skin made with gel interference glazes, inspired by Paua and suitable for use as a collage element in future painting or craft work.
• A colour blend reference board using a range of iridescent and fluid colours. You will also have gained experience of:
• Water media applications, dry brush painting and extrusion/resist techniques.
• How to use iridescent and interference paints.
• A range of top quality professional acrylic art products - pastes, gels and mediums, open and fluid colours, including interference and iridescent acrylics.

WORKSHOP OUTLINE:
The working properties of the new range of OPEN colours and mediums is the focus for this day. These unique acrylic paints have much in common with oils in that they stay workable for much longer than regular acrylics and can be used for applications not generally well suited to fast drying paints. The workshop will begin with a talk and demonstration of four different painting techniques which will show some of the advantages of OPEN over regular acrylics. This will cover blending, dry brushing, subtractive painting and mono printing. You will then choose what you would like to do and move through the day at your own pace, making up to four small art works.
Visiting guest artist and art educator from the UK - Sandra Rowney, will be on hand to assist throughout the day. Sandra has an artist residency in the walled kitchen garden of a stately home in Norfolk, England and is presently using acrylics to depict the restoration of the garden www.sandrarowney.com.
OUTCOMES:
At the end of the day you will have up to four small works in which you have:
• practiced blending with a range of OPEN colours and their mediums.
• made one or more monoprints using a scraffito technique with paint on glass.
• Worked with rags, colour shapers, palette knives and brushes to create an image using a subtractive technique on a non-absorbent ground.
• Created an image using dry brushing on a tinted coarse ground .Morag Stokes is a Wellington based painter and Certified Artist Educator with GOLDEN Artist Colors Ltd., one of only 7 in NZ.
